The Arrangement Book Review

Synopsis:

Title – The Arrangement  (Goodreads)

Author – Sarah Dunn (Goodreads)

Published – March 21st 2017

Genre – Fiction

Summary – Lucy and Owen, ambitious, thoroughly-therapized New Yorkers, have taken the plunge, trading in their crazy life in a cramped apartment for Beekman, a bucolic Hudson Valley exurb. They’ve got a two hundred year-old house, an autistic son obsessed with the Titanic, and 17 chickens, at last count. It’s the kind of paradise where stay-at-home moms team up to cook the school’s “hot lunch,” dads grill grass-fed burgers, and, as Lucy observes, “chopping kale has become a certain kind of American housewife’s version of chopping wood.”

When friends at a wine-soaked dinner party reveal they’ve made their marriage open, sensible Lucy balks. There’s a part of her, though-the part that worries she’s become too comfortable being invisible-that’s intrigued. Why not try a short marital experiment? Six months, clear ground rules, zero questions asked. When an affair with a man in the city begins to seem more enticing than the happily-ever-after she’s known for the past nine years, Lucy must decide what truly makes her happy-“real life,” or the “experiment?”

Thoughts:

I’m not sure where I first saw this book recommendation but it was the book cover that drew me in.

Lucy and Owen were living a normal life. They’ve been married for a few years and have a spectum son. During a wine-soaked dinner party, they heard of ‘The Arrangement.’

They balked at first. That is crazy! But they wrote down rules. Sorta like a six-month rumspringa. And thought, ‘what was the harm in trying; it’s only six months.’

I love this idea! (For a book – not real life!)

Lucy and Owen were honest and real characters to me. And in truth, this made me a little sad in the beginning. I mean, they shoulda been happy in their marriage. But things became almost routine. They were just going through the motions.

There were little pieces and phrases and actions that Dunn wrote that rung so true!

As for the other couples in The Arrangement, Lucy and Owen were the only couple that I actually kept track of. Because, I don’t know.. I just didn’t care.

Other stories weaved into books is something I love reading about. So I’m not sure why I didn’t really pay attention to them.
